Addison Kluttz Growing up on her family’s farm in the small, close-knit town of Mount Pleasant, NC, Addison Kluttz learned the value of hard work. As a Hospitality Management student at Cape Fear Community College, she’s channeling that same work ethic into her education. Why did you choose Cape Fear Community College?

I chose CFCC because of my passion for the coast. In high school, I spent two summers living in Oak Island, NC, working at a marina, and my time there allowed me to explore the Wilmington area. Upon visiting CFCC’s campus, I fell in love with the environment and knew I had to be a part of it. CFCC was the perfect choice for college because of its proximity to the beach, downtown environment, and small-town feel.

What made you want to study hospitality management?

My desire to study hospitality management stemmed from my love for the coast and meeting and talking to new people. My summers working at a marina in Oak Island allowed me to find my passion for the industry. Once I found my passion, I was hooked. This led me to realize how closely hospitality and the marina industry are related. I knew I loved working with people and on the water. I chose to study hospitality management to equip myself with the tools and knowledge necessary to excel in marina management.

What’s been your favorite part of the program so far?

My favorite part of the Hospitality Management program has been the small class sizes. These have allowed me to truly build personable, professional relationships with my professors, work closely with my peers, and deeply understand the curriculum.

How have the classes or instructors helped you learn about the industry?

My instructors at CFCC have been phenomenal. They have truly shaped my understanding of the industry. Professor Pete Doucet, the program director, has mentored me at CFCC. Mr. Doucet incorporates real-world thinking and scenarios into learning, allowing students to understand the curriculum through real-world examples. His teaching methods have molded me into a professional ready for the industry!

What are your career goals after you graduate?

Fortunately, in June of 2024, I was offered an incredible opportunity to join Safe Harbor Marinas in Southport, NC. After graduating, I plan to continue working for Safe Harbor Marina and work my way up the career ladder. My ultimate goal is to become a General Manager of a marina one day!

Do you want to work in any specific companies or industries after school?

As a Safe Harbor South Harbor Village Marina employee, I want to keep growing, learning, and developing!

Besides work and school, what do you enjoy doing?

In my free time, if I am not working or doing school work, I enjoy the simple pleasures in life, such as combing the beach for seashells, fishing, or laying out by the beach. I am also a firm believer in Christ; my faith, alongside God’s guidance, carries me through each day!

What advice would you give to students considering hospitality management at CFCC?

My only advice to students considering hospitality management at CFCC is not to dismiss the program because they aren’t fully intrigued by the restaurant or hotel industry.

Hospitality is a broad industry; many students do not realize it is not just about restaurants and hotels. I have spent much time at CFCC shedding light on this. It’s important for students considering the program to understand that hospitality is everywhere. Find your passion and niche; the program will guide you the rest of the way.
