Can you share your background and what made you want to join the Upward Bound program at CFCC?

I am a first-generation student born to immigrant parents. Knowing the sacrifices my parents made, I wanted to better prepare myself for the next step, so I joined Upward Bound. Ultimately, I ended up going to college, so I thank Upward Bound for preparing me for what was to come in college. When the Common App opened, I got accepted to over 15 colleges!

What was your experience like in the Upward Bound program?

Since I was a senior in Upward Bound for the first time, I initially felt out of place as I was one of the older students. As I got more involved in the program, I made it work out in my favor to prepare myself for the next chapter.

Which resources or opportunities in Upward Bound were most helpful to you?

I really enjoyed the college visits. It gave me a broader vision of what North Carolina has to offer.

Was there a class, activity, or mentor in Upward Bound who greatly impacted you?

The “¡Viva Mexico! ¡Viva America!” show at the Wilson Center had the most impact on me. It was the last major event I attended as a high schooler, and the feeling that this chapter of my life was ending never left me.

Are there any achievements from your time in Upward Bound that you’re especially proud of?

At Upward Bound’s end-of-year banquet, I really wasn’t expecting to get recognized alongside fellow members of the senior class. It was thoughtful of the Upward Bound leaders to do that.

Can you tell us about the university you’re attending now and what led you to choose it?

I knew I didn’t want to stay in Wilmington for my undergraduate studies. After my first time in Charlotte, I knew I wanted to study there while keeping my ROTC background. I committed to UNC-Charlotte while being in their Army ROTC program.

What are you studying, and what do you hope to do after graduation?

I am majoring in criminal justice and plan to minor in legal studies and military science. I am also pursuing a certification in Spanish-English Translation. I plan to go to law school to become a criminal or military law attorney.

How did your experience in Upward Bound and CFCC help you adjust to life at a four-year university?

Those college visits showed me the different city atmospheres. I was observant of the vibes and surroundings, ultimately leading me to choose Charlotte.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with us?

I am happy to share that I have been selected as one of UNC-Charlotte’s Orientation Counselors for the 2025-2026 school year!
