CFCC’s Associate in Fine Arts program: a launchpad for Gwen Plowman’s future
Since childhood, Gwen Plowman, a New Jersey native, had a passion for art and eagerly anticipated her art classes in school. She found art to be a natural outlet for self-expression and decided to pursue a college degree in art education early on.
Originally, Gwen planned to study art education at a university in New York. However, after enrolling, she took inventory of how much student debt she would acquire along with her degree. Gwen decided that was not the path for her.
Recalling the summers she spent visiting her dad in Wilmington during high school, Gwen explored colleges in North Carolina. In the process, she learned more about Wilmington and its vibrant art community and discovered Cape Fear Community College.
AFFORDABILITY AND COMFORT
Gwen realized that CFCC was the perfect place to start. CFCC’s reputation for quality education coupled with the affordable cost of tuition was very attractive. A bonus for Gwen is the convenience of living at home with her Dad while surrounded by an active arts environment. So, Gwen enrolled in CFCC’s Associate in Fine Arts University Transfer program.
Transitioning to college life was a challenge at first. Gwen had to adjust to freedoms that she had not experienced before. Her instructors and advisor were helpful in keeping her focused and guiding her toward the classes that were right for her. Gwen knew their assistance would also help her transfer to a four-year college.
“Finding CFCC and realizing how big the art community is in Wilmington made it such a good fit,” shared Gwen. “Knowing that I have a place where I fit in and I feel safe made it so easy to come to Wilmington.”
EXPANDING HER PORTFOLIO
Gwen enrolled in as many art classes as her schedule and degree plan allowed. During her art courses, Gwen had the opportunity to work with multiple mediums such as paint, clay, and metals.
“I’m not just learning painting,” explained Gwen. “I’m learning drawing, painting, 3D work, and ceramics. I’m learning all these things to expand my skills and see where I fit.”
Starting with two-dimensional design, Gwen progressed to drawing with CFCC Art Instructor Sharon Wozniak Spencer. Wozniak-Spencer encouraged Gwen to step outside of her art comfort zone by challenging her to try new techniques.
“Gwen is a motivated student who works diligently on her art ideas, and has an enthusiasm for knowledge with her art,” commented Wozniak-Spencer. “Many of our projects took research as well as drawings in many different mediums. Gwen has a strong desire to work in the art’s field as a career after college.”
Inspired by new undertakings, Gwen submitted four pieces to the 2023 CFCC Student Art Exhibition. She is excited that her piece, Reaching for the Stars, a mixed media sculpture, was accepted into the exhibition.EXPANDING HER RESUME
Wozniak-Spencer was also instrumental in assisting Gwen with securing an art-related job. Gwen applied at the Cameron Art Museum (CAM) and her application was bolstered by a letter of recommendation from Wozniak-Spencer.
“I was more than happy to let Gwen use me as a reference which helped her get the job at CAM,” explained Wozniak-Spencer. “Gwen loves her work as it’s a combination of what she has learned at CFCC and the museum.”
Gwen accepted a position as a security guard at the museum. She loves working at CAM and being surrounded by art. The position has opened her eyes to other career choices within the arts industry.
“This is the first time I’ve worked at a museum,” Gwen said. “It opened up my eyes to other choices of things I could do like working in museums as well as working in local art shops. I see new paths that I can take.”
TAKING HER SHOW ON THE ROAD
Following her graduation from CFCC, Gwen plans to transfer to UNC-Greensboro. She is now considering pursuing her Bachelor of Fine Arts and Studio Arts degree.
Gwen is eager to start the next phase of her educational journey. Through support and encouragement, she feels ready to face new challenges. Her instructors and advisors prepared her by motivating her to discover new talents and capabilities.
“From my instructors at CFCC, I learned what I can do as a person,” Gwen remarked. “My advisor guided me towards the appropriate classes and helped me have a seamless transfer. It’s just perfect.”
To get the most out of your time at CFCC, Gwen has some recommendations for those considering enrolling at CFCC:
- Work with your advisor to plan the best schedule for you.
