Graduate Spotlight: Solomon Smith

Solomon Smith Solomon Smith, originally from Leland, NC, will soon graduate from Cape Fear Community College with an Associate in Science en route to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte for a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. As a standout student ambassador at CFCC, Solomon shares the pivotal role the college has played in shaping his academic journey.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO ENROLL AT CFCC? WHY DID IT MAKE SENSE TO YOU?

I decided to enroll at CFCC for many reasons. First, the affordability. CFCC allowed me to take classes that were not only interesting but transferable! That was a big plus for me.

Next, the location. The downtown location is right in the middle of downtown Wilmington and is only a 15-minute drive for me. The North Campus is a little farther, but still very reasonable.

Finally, the smaller class sizes appealed to me a lot. I knew this would give me easier access to my professors if I had questions and a more tight-knit feeling in my classes. Looking back on it, all of these reasons still hold today.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE AT CFCC?

I’ve had such a good experience here. I could go deep into the details of specific classes, experiences, and opportunities, but that would definitely take up pages and pages.

To summarize, on my first day at CFCC, I knew I wanted to pursue an engineering degree at a four-year university. My advisors helped me set up a great schedule that allowed me to take general, transferable classes while still allowing me to explore specific degrees and schools.

After that, it was smooth sailing. Now, I’ve been able to take STEM classes like physics, chemistry, and calculus, along with classes like English, public speaking, microeconomics, and more.

DID YOU HAVE A FAVORITE CLASS OR INSTRUCTOR?

This is a tough one. I’ve had so many great classes here at CFCC. If I HAD to choose, I would pick Calculus 1 with Mr. Hinson. Going into this class, I felt a bit nervous, not knowing exactly what to expect. However, even from the first day, Mr. Hinson’s love for math and teaching was evident. Over time, I became more comfortable with the material and honed in on my abilities to solve math problems of all kinds. Calculus 1 truly set me up for a great foundation going forward in my college career.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE CONSIDERING STUDYING AT CFCC?

First of all, if you’re on the edge about enrolling, I would 100% recommend it! Then, take advantage of every resource you can. Everyone working here at the school is truly here to help. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean everything will just be given to you. It’s up to you to prioritize studying, follow good habits, go to the learning lab for tutoring when needed, etc. Simply put, make the most out of it!

ANY FINAL COMMENTS?

I just want to give a huge thank you to CFCC for all of the opportunities that it’s presented me with!
