Mikah Adkins is preparing to represent Cape Fear Community College on an international stage at PTK Catalyst 2026, the annual convention of Phi Theta Kappa: International College Honor Society.

Mikah is one of four semifinalists for the Phi Theta Kappa International Officer role of International Vice President – Division One. While there, she’ll also be recognized as one of four 2025 winners of the Honors Case Study Challenge.

It’s a big moment for Mikah, but it’s also part of a path she’s been intentionally building for years.

Because while she’s representing CFCC on an international stage, Mikah is still in high school.

By the time she graduates in May 2027, Mikah won’t just leave with a diploma. She’ll also earn her Associate in Science degree and a Medical Assisting certificate.

Building a Plan Early

A student at Southeast Area Technical High School, better known as SEA-Tech, Mikah began taking classes at CFCC during her sophomore year.

“I’ve always taken my academics very seriously,” she said. “I chose SEA-Tech to be able to get everything done as fast as possible so I can keep moving forward and doing more.”

Mikah has long known she wants to work in healthcare. Her goal is to become a cardiothoracic surgeon. After CFCC, Mikah plans to earn a bachelor’s degree in neuroscience before continuing to medical school.

Completing her Medical Assisting certificate now gives her hands-on experience and a practical foundation for what’s ahead.

Outside of class, Mikah volunteers at Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center, rotating through departments including neuroscience, radiology, and the Zimmer Cancer Institute. She also volunteers with SECU Family House, supporting families who have loved ones receiving care away from home.

“I love being in that environment and making the connections,” she said. “Meeting professionals and patients, hearing their stories, learning from the people who are already doing the work.”

Leading on Campus

At CFCC, she’s just as engaged. Mikah serves as president of the Alpha Chi Sigma chapter of Phi Theta Kappa and as a Student Ambassador. She encourages other students to take initiative.

“There are so many ways to connect and learn, but you have to be willing to ask questions,” she said. “Talk to your instructors, follow conversations, and build connections. A lot of opportunities happen because someone mentioned them in passing, and you just need to follow up.”

Those connections are already opening doors.

Headed to PTK Catalyst 2026

This spring, Mikah is headed to Baltimore for PTK Catalyst 2026. As one of four remaining candidates for International Vice President, Division One, she’ll participate in the election process. She’ll also be recognized as a 2025 Honors Case Study Challenge winner for her project, “Who Writes the Story: AI, Journalism, and the Power of Narratives’ Hold.”

“I’m excited to meet other people, make connections, and represent CFCC professionally and proudly.”

What PTK Offers Students at CFCC

This week, CFCC is celebrating PTK Awareness Week by highlighting opportunities for students who maintain strong academic standing and want to get involved. PTK members gain access to scholarships, leadership development, professional networking, and a community that extends well beyond campus.

Two events will be held on Wednesday, February 25.

From 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., members of PTK are invited to “The Office in the Office” event in the PTK office (S-400), featuring snacks, drinks, and a casual watch party of The Office.

At 3 p.m., the chapter will host a Member Merge, a welcome meeting for new members and an opportunity to connect with chapter leaders and fellow students.

To learn more about PTK’s Alpha Chi Sigma chapter at CFCC, stop by the office suite in S-400 or email ptk@cfcc.edu.
