Passions unleashed: Asli’s path to a veterinary career

Following her high school graduation, Asli Martinez-Torres found herself at a crossroads, unsure of her desired path. On one hand, she harbored an interest in the intriguing realm of forensic science, while on the other hand, her profound affection for animals tugged at her heart.

During her research, Asli discovered CFCC’s Veterinary Medical Technology program, which presented her with the opportunity to turn her passion for animals into a fulfilling career.

FACING COLLEGE CHALLENGES AND EMBRACING SUPPORT

Navigating the complexities of the college system proved to be challenging for Asli. Just as she enrolled at CFCC, the COVID-19 pandemic emerged, disrupting the traditional in-person learning environment.

As the college transitioned to online classes, Asli found herself grappling with the new remote learning experience. Nevertheless, Asli persevered, seeking guidance from her instructors and engaging with virtual resources to adapt to the online educational landscape.

Asli is grateful for the unwavering support she received from the faculty and staff at CFCC during her transition to college. Their dedication and responsiveness ensured she had the necessary resources and support to succeed in her studies, even in the face of unprecedented circumstances.

“As a first-generation college student, trying to steer my way through the system was kind of a struggle,” shared Asli. “Thankfully, all of my CFCC instructors were willing to help. The faculty and staff here are really amazing. They’re always willing to help.”

UNLEASHING PASSION AND SKILLS

While Asli entered CFCC’s Veterinary Medical Technology program with a passion for animals, she lacked experience (save the childhood musings of being a veterinarian). Through practical experience and hands-on training, she quickly acquired essential skills and developed a deep understanding of the field.

“By the end of the first semester, I had already learned skills that helped me get a job at a vet clinic,” shared Asli. “So, when local clinics started recruiting CFCC students, I decided to apply for a job. Even though I had never worked at a veterinarian clinic before, I had acquired enough skills to receive a job offer.”

Impressed by her dedication and newfound knowledge, Capeside Animal Hospital offered Asli a part-time job, recognizing her potential and eagerness to contribute to their team. Asli’s work-based learning provided a unique advantage to apply classroom lessons in real-world scenarios.

EXPLORING SPECIALIZATIONS

CFCC Veterinary Medical Technology program empowers students to choose specialties that align with their interests and aptitudes. Whether it is surgery, neurology, cardiology, or any other field, students are provided with the necessary resources and mentorship to pursue their chosen specialization. As her studies progressed, Asli found herself naturally gravitating towards a specific focus within veterinary medicine.

In the beginning, Asli was initially drawn to the cardiology focus due to her father’s heart issues, which ignited her curiosity about the intricacies of the heart. However, as she immersed herself in the program and gained practical experience in surgery, Asli’s interests shifted.

Asli realized that anesthesia held a greater fascination for her and decided to change her focus accordingly. This change allowed Asli to explore the captivating realm of anesthesia and deepen her understanding of its crucial role in veterinary medicine.

TAKING GROWTH TO THE NEXT LEVEL

After her graduation in the summer, Asli will dedicate her spare time to diligent preparation for the upcoming Veterinary Technician National Exam scheduled for the fall. Once she successfully passes the exam, Asli has her sights set on pursuing a bachelor’s degree at Appalachian State University , taking her educational journey to the next level.

CFCC Vet Med Tech graduates can seamlessly transfer into Appalachian State University’s Vet Tech program. Asli can also complete the program online, easily balancing her studies with her work at Capeside Animal Hospital. This flexibility enables her to continue gaining valuable hands-on experience at the animal hospital and make a difference in the lives of animals while earning her degree.

NURTURING SUCCESS

The exceptional care and attention provided by the CFCC community have helped shape Asli’s college journey and instilled in her a deep appreciation for the dedicated faculty and staff who go above and beyond to ensure student success. Throughout her time at CFCC, Asli immersed herself in her studies, honing her knowledge and skills in veterinary medicine.

CFCC Veterinary Medical Technology program not only equipped Asli with a solid foundation in animal care and health but also instilled in her the value of compassion and empathy towards all creatures, great and small. With her determination, knowledge, and compassionate nature, Asli is poised to impact the lives of animals and their human companions profoundly.
