Wendley Noel’s Journey from the Bahamas to a Career on the Water in North Carolina
Originally from the Bahamas, Wendley Noel cherished his island home, but his mother envisioned a brighter future for her son, especially in education. This aspiration led Wendley to move to Florida, where he stayed with family friends.
Upon arriving in the United States, Wendley quickly realized the necessity of hard work. He found a job and, with determination, rode his bike to work daily until he saved enough to buy a car. During his time in Florida, Wendley met his wife, and the couple welcomed their first child.
Establishing Roots in North Carolina
Seeking to establish roots, Wendley and his family moved to North Carolina, choosing the area for its coastal proximity, reminiscent of the Bahamas. Understanding the importance of education in securing a stable future, Wendley began researching career options that aligned with his passions, which are the water and helping people. His research led him to Cape Fear Community College’s Outboard Systems program .
“I want to learn something of value, something with substance, and to help people. That’s what CFCC is giving me. It provides students with the opportunity to become something better.”
Wendley found the enrollment process at CFCC straightforward, thanks to the supportive recruiter he met with. Balancing his role as the sole provider for his family with his educational pursuits, Wendley appreciated the affordability and flexibility of CFCC’s programs.
His instructor’s understanding and willingness to accommodate his needs made a significant difference, allowing Wendley to manage both work and studies effectively.
“My instructor, Mr. Nickel, has been very kind and understanding. If you show you’re willing to put in the effort, he will meet you halfway.”
Through CFCC’s connections, Wendley secured a job at West Marine, where the skills he has been acquiring in the Outboard Systems program have already proved invaluable. He is thankful for the three-day-a-week class schedule that permits him to work while attending school.
“I’m from the Bahamas. I’ve been around boats, but wasn’t well-informed on the technical side of things. The training here and my job are opening my mind and deepening my understanding of the marine industry.”
A Supportive Learning Environment
One of Wendley’s favorite aspects of the program is the camaraderie among classmates from diverse backgrounds. These relationships have been crucial for Wendley, who values the supportive learning environment.
Wendley plans to continue his education at CFCC, progressing from the Intro to Outboard Systems course to Midrange Marine Maintenance and Inline Marine Maintenance.
He is grateful to CFCC for accommodating his responsibilities as a father, always willing to work with him when family obligations arise.
“CFCC has not only helped me with my education but also to overcome obstacles in life. As a parent of a small child and one on the way, I often face unexpected challenges, and CFCC has always been willing to work with me. That’s been the most special thing for me. At one point, I didn’t have a job, and someone here was able to help me with that. Life has many surprises, and sometimes you feel stuck, wondering what to do. My advice is not to sit around feeling alone. If you’re willing to open up just a bit, someone here might be willing to meet you halfway and help you out.”
Celebrating U.S. Citizenship
Recently, Wendley celebrated a significant milestone of becoming a United States citizen. Reflecting on his journey, Wendley shares,
“America has been a journey, to say the least. It was definitely a learning curve. When I first arrived, it was a culture shock. As time passes, I realize more and more why my mother wanted me to be here and that the opportunities available are greater than I ever expected from my little island home.”
