Parents FAQ

  • My child has a disability. How can I ensure they get the help they need in college?

The most effective way to help is to encourage your student to register with the Student Accessibility Services (SAS) office immediately. While you can assist them in gathering the required disability documentation, the student must take the lead in scheduling appointments and completing the registration process.

  • What is the difference between high school and college for students with disabilities?

The biggest difference is self-identification. In high school, the school is responsible for identifying students who need help (via IEPs). In college, the student must self-identify and request their own accommodations. Parents generally lead the process in high school, but in college, the student is the sole advocate. • If my child signs a FERPA waiver, can I speak to the college on their behalf?

No. A signed release allows staff to share information with you, but Student Accessibility Services will never communicate about a student without the student being present. Even in meetings where a parent is present, we require the student to lead the conversation to practice self-advocacy.

  • Can a parent request accommodations for their child?

No. All requests for accommodations must come directly from the student.

  • Can I request progress updates or grades for my child?

No. College students are expected to manage their own academic progress. It is inappropriate for a parent to contact an instructor regarding their student’s grades. If a student is struggling to communicate with an instructor, they should contact the SAS office for advice, but we cannot share academic updates with parents unless the student is present.

  • Do these rules change if my child is under 18 years of age?

No. These policies apply to all students enrolled in college classes, regardless of age (including Dual Enrollment/CCP students).
